General Husky FAQs
Should I breed my Siberian Husky?
As my friend Eva says, "Puppies are not cookies, we do not make a 'batch'”. The decision to breed your dog should be based on the contribution your dog can make to the breed.
Can Siberian Huskies live in a warm climate?
Yes. Although the Siberian Husky is a Northern sled dog, he is adaptable to any climate given the appropriate care. Shade from the sun, a cool place to rest and abundant water will allow your husky to thrive even in hot climates.
Are Huskies good guard dogs?
No. Huskies do not have territorial instincts. They do not recognize an area as “theirs” to protect from intruders, either canine or human. They are more likely to befriend a burglar than frighten one.
How much do Huskies shed?
A lot. Huskies usually “blow” their coats twice a year. This is an amazing process if you haven’t seen it.
What coat colors are acceptable in Huskies? Do all Huskies have blue eyes?
Huskies are one of the few breeds of dog that come in any and every coat color and eye color. Many have blue eyes, but brown eyes and amber colored eyes are also common. To see pictures of the many varieties of coat colors and information about the genetics of coat color, go to: www.huskycolors.com
What should I feed my Husky?
Siberian huskies developed on a diet high in protein and animal fat. Pound for pound, they require less food than many dogs of comparable size.
Do I need a fenced yard to have a Husky?
Only if you ever want to leave him outside without you holding his leash. The Houdinis of the dog world, huskies bite through, dig up, out of, under and jump over any and all types of tie outs and fences.
What genetic health issues do Huskies have?
Siberian huskies have the following genetic health concerns:
- Juvenile and adult cataracts that can result in loss of vision and painful glaucoma
- Undescended testicles (cannot be shown or bred)
- Seizure disorders
- Thyroid deficiency
- Hip dysplasia

How do I find a reputable breeder?
Reputable breeders are breeding their dogs for a reason; usually trying to improve the conformation (structure) or working ability of the dog. They are typically involved in showing or working their dogs in some capacity, whether for recreation or competition. Reputable breeders are forthcoming with information regarding the hip and eye clearances of their dogs, or other genetic tests as they may apply to dogs other than huskies.
